ChatGPT already had voice dictation in the browser. I wanted to use it in other apps on my Mac: press a shortcut, speak, and have the text appear where I was working.
MicPipe is a small menu bar app that does this through a dedicated Chrome window. It can also use AI to fix grammar or turn spoken notes into an email draft or coding instruction before pasting the text.
Dictation across apps
- Hold a key to speak, or use a shortcut to start and stop recording.
- Edit the AI prompts to control how the text is rewritten.
- Start ChatGPT’s realtime voice mode with a shortcut.
- Cancel without pasting, and restore the clipboard after inserting text.
MicPipe automates the browser and uses ChatGPT for speech recognition. It needs Chrome, a signed-in ChatGPT session and macOS automation permissions. The main features work, but some edge cases and reliability issues still need attention.
